Vindon Scientific - Cryogenic Storage

The storage of cells at temperatures below -130 ºC is the temperature at which biological activity ceases storing at these temperatures is necessary to preserve the material unaltered. Mechanical devices are available to maintain temperatures below this temperature but they can be noisy, generate heat and generally require liquid nitrogen backup to avert disaster should the electricity supply be disrupted or the freezer fail. This makes simple liquid nitrogen cryogenic storage at -196°C a very popular choice.

To eliminate the contamination risk associated with liquid nitrogen and to ensure there can be no cross contamination with the stored samples. It is generally recommended that samples be stored in the vapour phase above the nitrogen (-178 to –150ºC).

The Vindon Cryobank uses DryStore freezers for cryogenic storage. They are specifically designed as vapour phase storage systems that have a slight positive pressure in the sample chamber. This circulates out pathogens and offers exceptional sample security and operator safety as the storage area is completely free of liquid nitrogen; the liquid nitrogen is housed in a jacket that surrounds the chamber. This means that temperature performance down to –190°C can easily be achieved, where the liquid nitrogen is held In this state the temperature is well below the level required to keep the material in first-class condition.
