Stem cell revolution that could win the war on Alzheimers: Cure can be stored for 20 years after blood test

Healthy adults will be able to boost their chances of surviving cancer and diseases such as Alzheimers by freezing stem cells taken from their blood for the first time.
A British company has been granted a licence to extract the cells, so that anyone can now pay to store them in the hope that they will one day help to cure fatal conditions.
Until now, it has only been possible to bank stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood and embryos left over from fertility treatment.

The most versatile stem cells are those derived from blastocysts – recently fertilised human embryos.

They can be maintained indefinitely in cell culture and then prompted with appropriate biochemical signals to develop into almost any type of specialised cell that might be needed for medical purposes.

Oristem’s blood-derived cells fall into the broad category of adult stem cells, which maintain a lifelong existence in many body tissues.

Stem cell banks for adults get go-ahead.

A chance for the “wealthy well” to boost their chances of surviving cancer and other diseases by banking stem cells extracted from their own blood is being offered by biomedical companies in the first service of its kind.

The service, called Oristem, has just received a regulatory licence from the Human Tissue Authority. Previously it was only possible to store stem cells for babies from umbilical cord blood.
